John Stomps
President & CEO, Total Transportation

John Stomps founded Total Transportation of Mississippi, LLC in 1990. John’s executive leadership responsibilities include overseeing all functions of Total Transportation, demanding excellence from all departments. Since day one John has been passionate about Safety, Security & Service. He believes these focus areas are how Total has been a vibrant company for over 30 years.

In the 1970’s, John started his professional career in the residential construction Industry. As a young business owner, he saw firsthand the economic impacts of prime interest rates and crude oil prices. After selling his Alabama based company and shifting his focus to the transportation industry, John moved his family to Jackson MS in 1981.

During this time period John worked for Consolidated Freightways (CF). Being a city dispatcher was his first assignment, then quickly moving up the ranks to Terminal Manager. The TM position led to much national recognition with CF and by 1988 he was managing a region of facilities. CF was considered one of the top LTL trucking companies in the country during the 1980’s, and provide John with tremendous training that gave him the confidence to start his own company.

By the spring of 1990, John and Rick Kale co-founded Total transportation. With John’s expertise in operations and Rick’s in sales, they lacked one key element, financial expertise. In July of 1991, Hugh Statum joined the company and brought that expertise.

In the Mid- 1990’s John was able to help cast a strategic vision for Total’s operations and set the tone for long term sustainability in the market place. Early success was due to john’s attitude and commitment to one of the highest on-time delivery percentages in the country. By 1999, John’s dedication for service helped drive the need for outside terminals to domicile the fleet growth needed to service customers. Terminals included: Tupelo, MS, Memphis, TN, Knoxville, TN and Kearny, NJ.

Throughout the 2000’s, Total’s growth and success was being noticed by several large national truckload carriers.  In less than 15 years John had successfully turned a small 20 truck operation into a mid-size national carrier of 500 trucks. By 2007, U.S. Xpress Enterprises purchased a majority interest in total, naming John Stomps the President and CEO.

Since 2007, John has led Total through the worst economic recession since the Great Depression and the most challenging regulatory environment in transportation history. Even with the challenges, John and his team have aligned Total’s 900 trucks with some of the top corporations in the country and built a sustainable network that proudly serves America’s people.

John holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Jacksonville State University. He sits on the board of the Mississippi Trucking Association and chairs the American Trucking Association’s Health and Wellness Subcommittee.

John and his wife, Karan, split their time between Orange Beach and Uriah, AL. They enjoy spending their time gardening, hunting and offshore fishing, they have three children: Jerrica, Christopher, and Morgan.
